Professor Tsuboi of Faculty of Economics won the Jury's Award (Disaster Prevention Design) at the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation x Sustainability Awards 2026 (Utsunomiya Campus)

On Saturday, January 31, 2026, at the award ceremony for the Disaster Prevention/Mitigation x Sustainability Awards 2026 held at Kyobashi Trust Tower (Chuo-ku, Tokyo), Professor Sotaro Tsuboi of the Department of Regional Faculty of Economics Department of Regional Economics, Teikyo University, received the Jury Award (Disaster Prevention Design).
The award is given by the Disaster Mitigation Sustainable Technology Association, a general incorporated association, and evaluates activities and results, as well as the current and expected level of contribution and dissemination, from the perspectives of resilience and sustainability in disaster prevention and mitigation, and contribution to the SDGs.
The initiative for which Professor Tsuboi received the award is a "disaster prevention education for elementary and junior high school students" on "remote islands" that has been continuously implemented for about 10 years, and has included the permanent exhibition of large 3D maps to promote understanding of evacuation routes, disaster prevention lectures using the creation of topographical models using simple materials, and workshops with the participation of local fishery cooperative members to pass on disaster experiences from adults to children. Currently, there are over 400 inhabited remote islands in Japan, with a population of approximately 600,000, but there is a high risk of them being isolated in the event of a disaster, making disaster prevention education for children and students an urgent issue.
We will continue to work to contribute to improving regional disaster prevention and response capabilities through surveys, research, and on-site practice.
